Pantheon Name And It’s Meaning

The word Pantheon is derived from the Greek words Pan (All) and theos (God). its complete meaning “Honour all Gods”. This temple was dedicated to the worship of all gods. It was first built as a temple to all gods.

 

The Original Pantheon Burned Down

The first two Pantheons both burnt down. The one we admire today is the third and final installment of this historical site.

 

Architecture Of Pantheon Monument

The roman temple was originally built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and the son-in-law of the emperor Augustus. It was completed in either 27 or 25 BCE. In 80 CE, it was damaged by fire and restored by the emperor Domitian. It was struck by lightning and burned again in 110 before rebuilt in its present form during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. The new temple curiously bore an inscription to its first Parton Marcus Agrippa, which, for centuries, led people to overestimate its age.

The inscription reads M (ARCUS) . AGRIPPA . L (VCIVS) . F (ILIVS) . COS . TERTIUM . FECIT.

In 202, the building was repaired by the emperor Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla, who added their own, lengthier inscription underneath that of Agrippa, the words are hardly visible today, but at the time they were carved, the letters may have been painted red to improve their legibility.

The Pantheon dome was the largest in the world for 1300 years and until today it is the largest unsupported dome in the world. Its internal diameter is 142 ft (43.m), which is the same as the height from the pavement to the oculus. The dome, which sits on a six-meter thick wall, is made up of five rings, each of 2 coffers that diminish in size as it rises.

The large interior dome is one of the highlights of the Pantheon. The thickness of the dome, going from 21 feet at the base to 4 feet at the top, thus lightening the stress of the weight of the roof. the dome was the largest constructed in the ancient world.

A 27-foot wide hole in the ceiling is known as Oculus. The hole in the Pantheon serves as the only form of natural light managing to find its way into the interior. someone thought that oculus might have been used as a sundial in ancient times.

 

Beautiful Fountain in front of Pantheon Monument

In front of Pantheon one beautiful Fountain is called “Fountain of Pantheon”. It was designed by famous architecture Giacomo Della Porta in 1575 and sculpted out of marble by Leonardo Sormani.

In 1711, the design of Fountain was modified which included different basins, made of stone, and in the center on a Plinth with four dolphins decorating the base.

 

Pantheon was Used as a Tomb

The Pantheon was used as a tomb. According to BBC, 76 men have been buried in the Pantheon. Italian kings Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I, along with Umberto’s wife queen Margherita, are also entombed in the Pantheon.

 

Now It is a Santa Maria Rotonda Church

In 609, the pantheon was converted into a church with the name of Santa Maria ad Martyres and also known as Santa Maria Rotonda. In this time, a small bell tower was added to the apex of the pediment and this was replaced by twin bell towers in the 17th century, which were nicknamed as “asses’ ears”. The bell towers were removed in 1883.

None the less it is called the Pantheon by virtually everybody. It seems to exist independent of the religious rule but more of a tribute to the past.

 

Pantheon Vs Parthenon

Everyone thought that Pantheon and Parthenon are the same. But, both are different. And that’s no surprise because the names are super similar. But the two are very different. The Pantheon and the Parthenon both are built as temples to the gods but The Pantheon was built in Rome to celebrate all the Roman Gods whereas the Parthenon was built in Greece for the goddess Athena.
